GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina sophomore Joe Ingle is one of 70 players named to the initial Watch List for the 12th annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Stopper-of-the-Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball, the association announced Monday.
In his rookie season with the Pirates, Ingle appeared in a team and conference-best 32 games out of the bullpen posting a 1-0 record with eight saves in 31.2 innings of work earning NCBWA First-Team Freshman All-America honors. He allowed just five runs (four earned) on 17 hits sporting a team-best 1.14 ERA with 41 strikeouts to 23 walks.
Ingle earned Louisville Slugger National Player-of-the-Week honors by Collegiate Baseball after tallying 10 strikeouts in 5.1 scoreless innings over three appearances from Mar. 24-29. During the week, he registered a career-high seven strikeouts at UNC Wilmington (Mar. 24) in which he fanned all seven batters he faced in 2.2 frames. The lone out he didn't record via strikeout came when Travis Watkins threw out a runner to end the bottom of the fifth. He registered one strikeout against Memphis (Mar. 28) in game two of a doubleheader while allowing a hit in one inning of work. The righty capped off the week with two more punch-outs in the series finale against the Tigers (Mar. 29) tossing 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.
The Fayetteville, N.C. native, who set three ECU freshman records (appearances, ERA and saves), was on of four Pirates to earn AAC All-Tournament honors after appearing in three games posting a 1-0 record with a pair of saves and posting a 1.80 ERA in five innings, helping the Pirates claim the 2015 AAC Tournament Title.
Nominations for the NCBWA Stopper-of-the-Year Award were made by baseball sports information/media relations contacts. The 2016 Stopper-of-the-Year Watch List will be updated with a midseason release on Wednesday, April 27, including the national saves leaders. At the conclusion of the regular season, the Division I national saves leader and four other relief pitching standouts will be selected as finalists and released Wednesday, June 8, prior to start of NCAA Super Regional competition.
The NCBWA's All-America Committee will select the winner, with this year's recipient to be announced at the 2016 College World Series.
Ingle and the Pirates kickoff the 2016 season Friday, Feb. 19th hosting Longwood at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. (EST).
